Welcome to The Pier Hotel – Where History Meets the Sea At Cinnamon House Design, we were proud to be part of the recent transformation of The Pier Hotel — a much-loved historic landmark in Kaikōura, on the edge of Canterbury. This project was a standout example of how commercial interior design can elevate a space while respecting its heritage. First built around 1885, The Pier Hotel retains its original charm, but after years of wear, it was time for a refresh. The brief was clear: enhance the atmosphere and comfort while preserving the unique character that guests have loved for generations. In June 2024, the hotel underwent a significant renovation. Our approach to this hotel interior design project focused on timeless styling with a light modern touch — bringing back the warmth of the original interiors without overshadowing the building’s history. From the restaurant to the bar, every space was thoughtfully considered. The restaurant interior design aimed to maximise natural light and make the most of the panoramic views of the Kaikōura Ranges and Ingals’ Bay. Furnishings were selected for both comfort and durability, while the layout encourages relaxed dining and casual coffee stops alike. The bar, steeped in over a century of local history, was updated with care. We preserved historic photographs and memorabilia, ensuring that regulars and first-time visitors still feel the legacy of the whaling and fishing fleets that once passed through. The refreshed interior brings a sense of ease, character, and quiet luxury — everything you’d want from a coastal escape. This project reflects our philosophy for commercial interior design in Canterbury: blending story, setting, and functionality to create memorable spaces. Whether it’s a boutique hotel or a bustling restaurant, we believe good design should honour the past while inviting guests to stay a little longer.
